John M. Carlson

  • Founder and President of General Systems Corporation (PR China)
  • Founder and General Manager, Fourth Shift Asia Computer Corporation
  • Co-founder, Vice-President Research and Development, chief product architect, Fourth Shift Corporation (USA)
  • Fellow (CFPIM) of the American Production and Inventory Control Society

  • Mr. Carlson began his career in manufacturing management consulting in 1974. At that time, Mr. Carlson was working in a factory as a chemist. However, Mr. Carlson recognized that most of the problems the factory faced were related to management rather than technical product issues. Gradually, over a period of several years, Mr. Carlson shifted his focus toward management. Mr. Carlson was promoted several times from chemist to production control manager, to MRP-II implementation project leader. It was during this period that Mr. Carlson became one of the first persons to successfully pass the series of examinations sponsored by the American Production and Inventory Control Society (APICS) to become a Certified Fellow in Production and Inventory Management.
In 1978, Mr. Carlson was hired by Abbott Laboratories in North Chicago to lead the MRP-II implementation in one of its divisions. In that year, Mr. Carlson became the Educational Coordinator for the Chicago Chapter of APICS, one of the largest APICS chapters in the United States. On evenings and weekends, he organized the chapter’s certification classes, personally teaching the inventory management and MRP-II classes.
In 1979, Mr. Carlson was hired as Manufacturing Systems Consultant for a large MRP-II software company. In 1981, Mr. Carlson became the Product Manager for Comserv’s AMAPS manufacturing system. In this position, Mr. Carlson was responsible for developing product specifications and marketing collateral material.
In 1984, Mr. Carlson was selected by Comserv’s management to become co-founder and Product Development Manager for a new spin-off company called Fourth Shift Corporation. The mission of Fourth Shift was to produce a microcomputer based MRP-II system with main-frame capabilities.
Mr. Carlson was the product architect for Fourth Shift’s MSS product. In 1985, Fourth Shift promoted Mr. Carlson to Vice-President of Development, then to Vice-President of Research and Development in 1988. It was also in 1988 that Mr. Carlson participated in a computer seminar at a university in southern China. This experience led to Mr. Carlson’s interest in China.
In 1989, Mr. Carlson began to travel frequently to China to undertake various software projects on behalf of Fourth Shift. In early 1990, Fourth Shift invited several Chinese software engineers to the United States for training. In the fall of 1990 Mr. Carlson led a team of three other American software engineers (with their families) to China to work alongside the trained Chinese software engineers to develop an international version of Fourth Shift’s MSS product. This work was completed in China in 1992.
In 1992, John Carlson received permission from Fourth Shift to open a representative office in Tianjin, China. In 1993, the rep office became a wholly foreign owned subsidiary and Asia headquarters for Fourth Shift, using the name Fourth Shift Asia Computer Corporation. Mr. Carlson served as General Manager for the new company from 1993 until early 1997. Sales developed rapidly: US$200K in 1992, $600K in 1993, $1.8Million in 1994, $5.3Million in 1995, $8.9MM in 1996. By the time Mr. Carlson left Fourth Shift in 1997, there were more than 250 Chinese companies using the Fourth Shift MSS product to run their factories, and Mr. Carlson had built a solid team of support and service for Fourth Shift throughout Asia. He had placed offices and distributorships in Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan.
In early 1998, Mr. Carlson, along with several of his Chinese colleagues from Fourth Shift Asia, founded General Systems Corporation in China. General Systems Corporation was founded on the premise that good software products are not enough to transform Chinese industry. Rather, good manufacturing software must be combined with effective management practice. In addition to offering ERP/MRP-II software and implementation support, GSC focuses on using software tools and business process re-engineering as a framework to develop a culture of productivity and continuous improvement within a factory.

    Zheng Ming

  • Senior Management Consultant, HR, Sales, and Marketing
  • Founder and Vice General Manager of General Systems Corporation (PR China)
  • Vice General Manager, Asia Marketing Manager, Fourth Shift Asia
  • Vice General Manager, Operations (including Human Resources), Fourth Shift Asia Computer Corporation
  • Vice General Manager of Sales, Fourth Shift Asia Computer Corporation
  • Vice General Manager, Pearl-Orchid Knitting Co., Ltd. (Hong Kong Company)

  • Zheng Ming began his career in business at Pearl-Orchid Knitting Co., Ltd.. as a sales representative. Within six months, Mr. Zheng distinguished himself as the top sales person in the company. While at Pearl-Orchid, Mr. Zheng was promoted first to Department Manager for International Trade, then to Vice General Manager, Operations.
In 1992, Zheng Ming assisted Fourth Shift Corporation of the United States in establishing a representative office in Tianjin, China. In 1993, he guided Fourth Shift through the process of converting its representative office to a wholly foreign owned subsidiary. With Zheng Ming’s assistance, the new Tianjin based company became the Asia headquarters for Fourth Shift, eventually opening offices in six additional Chinese cities and five countries in Asia. Mr. Zheng orchestrated the opening of all of the offices in China and the office in Malaysia. In August 1993, Mr.Zheng was promoted to Vice General Manager Sales. During this period, Fourth Shift sales expanded by about three times. Mr. Zheng educated himself concerning the China ERP market, the plans of competitors, and leading sales personnel and consultants.
Due to rapid sales growth and shortage of personnel, Mr. Zheng was asked in late 1994 to manage Human Resources and operations for Fourth Shift. Fourth Shift brought in a sales manager from the United States to take over Mr. Zheng’s sales responsibilities. In his new position, Zheng Ming devoted his attention to developing standard operating procedures and recruiting personnel. He was able to recruit the top talent in the China ERP industry to Fourth Shift. He also set up a complete set of policies and procedures including an HR performance incentive system. Mr. Zheng built a solid basis for Fourth Shift’s continued rapid growth over the next several years.
In late 1995, Mr. Zheng again became directly involved in sales and marketing, this time as Vice General Manager, Marketing. Not only was he successful in continuing to develop the China market, but also in establishing new markets in Malaysia, Singapore, and Taiwan. During this period, large numbers of sales leads were generated by Mr. Zheng’s marketing staff to support the sales team, and several key distributor relationships were formed. With the cooperation between the marketing and the sales team, the sales revenue achieved nearly $9,000,000 in 1996.
In early 1998, Mr. Zheng along with several of his Chinese colleagues from Fourth Shift Asia, founded General Systems Corporation in China. Mr. Zheng serves as Vice-General Manager in charge of operations, marketing, and new business consulting.
With an engineering degree and senior manufacturing management experience, Mr. Zheng is ideally suited for his additional role at GSC as Senior Consultant, Sales, Marketing, and HR. Mr. Zheng participated in the business consulting projects for Southwest Pharmaceutical Company, ChongQing and Far East Aeronautical Factory, Xi’an. These companies consider their projects a success under Mr. Zheng’s guidance.
General Systems Corporation was founded on the premise that good software products are not enough to transform Chinese industry. Liu Bo Ying
  • Vice GM Consulting, Symix/General Systems Corporation
  • Lead ERP Implementation Consultant for 30 Factories
  • China Consulting Manager, Fourth Shift Corporation
  • North China Regional Manager, Fourth Shift Corporation
  • 15 Years MRPII/ERP Research
  • 50 Published Research Articles
  • Associate Professor, Tianjin University Co-author of the Standard Textbook in China for MRPII Concepts and Implementation

  • In addition to a deep theoretical knowledge of MRPII/ERP, Ms. Liu Bo Ying has strong practical skills and leadership qualities in implementing manufacturing systems in a variety of industrial settings. Several of her implementations have won top recognition in China as outstanding successes. For example, her ERP implementation at the XuZhou Construction Equipment factory in JiangSu Province was recently recognized as one of the top three ERP implementations in state-run factories in China.
In 1981, Liu Bo Ying began her career as a lecturer in the Computer Science Department at Tianjin University. In 1987, she was transferred to the Department of Applied Economics and System Engineering. During this period she began her research on MRPII theory and practice.
In the early the 1990’s, Liu Bo Ying co-authored the book “MRPII Concepts and Implementation” which is embraced in China as the standard work on MRPII. She also began to publish many research articles on MRPII/ERP concepts and implementation in various newspapers and magazines. Her works include “The Important factors to make MRPII/ERP Implementation Successful”, “ How to Conduct Successful Education and Training for MRPII”, “MRPII and JIT”, and “How to Prepare for MRPII/ERP Project Implementation”.
While researching MRPII and writing books, Liu Bo Ying was deeply involved in the practical aspects of MRPII. During the 1990’s she has been the lead consultant in approximately 30 MRPII/ERP projects in a variety of industries in China, including Chinese State-owned enterprises, joint ventures, and wholly foreign owned companies. For example, Ingersoll-Rand Excavation Machinery Company, PPG Paint Company, Kraft Food Corporation, Xu Zhou Construction Equipment Company, Xu Zhou Loading Machinery Company, Tianjin Limimg Cosmetics Company, Tianchi-Mitel Telecom Corporation, Beijing Warner Gear Company, China Automotive Group, Merlin Gerin Circuit Breaker Company of Group Schneider, Chang Gi Service Station Equipment Company Ltd., and the Tianjin Engine Factory. All of these companies consider their implementations a success under Ms. Liu’s guidance.
Because of her success in the practice of MRPII/ERP, she was nominated by the Science Committee of Tianjin to conduct research on the strategy to develop MRPII/ERP in the manufacturing enterprises of China. Her recommendations are currently being implemented throughout China.
Ms. Liu sees MRPII as an important part of improving productivity in Chinese factories, but only a part. Currently she is researching the integration of business process re-engineering and continuous improvement within an MRPII implementation. Ms. Liu notes that in many companies, the benefits of MRPII are diminished when companies circumvent the logic of the system in order to continue working according to old habits. “An MRP implementation provides an excellent opportunity to measure and re-engineer processes within a factory in order to improve the cost, quality, and cycle time of each process,” Ms. Liu asserts. “Some members of the implementation team should have the opportunity to form the nucleus of a continuous improvement team within the factory, once the implementation is finished.”
